Chapter 23
The next morning I woke up to Lorenaâs sleeping face. I had forgotten that she spent the night and started to feel uncomfortable again. The smell of bacon alerted my senses and I slowly got out of bed so not to wake her.
My aunt was cooking breakfast again, and this time she was making bacon, grits and toast.
âGood morning,â she said not looking back at me.
âGood morning,â I sat down at the table.
âYou have a good sleep?â Aunt Shannon turned off the stove and then turned around with a grin on her face.
âIt was okay. Kind of cramped, but it was fine,â I said, trying not to feel embarrassed.
Aunt Shannon sat down next to me and gave me a long stare, âSo are you two...â She was trying to whisper.
I widened my eyes and blushed, âWhat? No-Lorena is just my friend.â
âI was just asking, I mean I donât really see you hang around boys.â
âI used to in Cali all the time.â
âWell, this is different. You donât look at her like sheâs one of your guy friends.â
âThatâs because sheâs a girl!â
Aunt Shannon smiled, âWell, if you two are, Iâm okay with it. At least you like someone.â
âWe arenât, and I donât. She is just a friend.â
âOne that you get all tough and blush aroun-â
âGood morning,â Lorena walked in rubbing her eyes with a yawn.
âGood morning, Lorena,â Shannon smiled at me, then at her, âwell, I have to go to work, but you guys have fun today on your date-â
âGroup outing,â I said, âthere will be four of us.â
âRight...â Aunt Shannon laughed, âWell have fun. Iâll see you later on tonight or tomorrow morning.â
âOkay. Love you,â I said. I was shocked that I had just said that, and so was she.
âI love you too, sweetie,â Aunt Shannonâs eyes started to get glossy, and she turned away. âDonât want to be late for work,â she sniffled, âhave fun,â she said one last time before she left out.
âAw, that was cute,â Lorena made herself a plate and sat down at the table across from me.
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â I made myself a plate and then sat back down at the table, âSo, you ready for today?â
Lorenaâs smile faded a little, âSomewhat. Iâm a little nervous.â
âItâs okay. Iâll be your back up if anything happens.â
Lorena nodded. She looked like she was going to be sick.
âYou can do so much better than him,â I said, âYouâre very....cu-pretty.â
âIâm cu-pretty? Never heard that one before,â she laughed.
âItâs a new word I just made up today,â we both laughed and decided to talk about something else. After we finished breakfast we both took showers and got dressed. Lorena had to wear a pair of my clothes since she didnât have any, and thank goodness I had a new pack of boxers.
I laughed at Lorena when she entered the living room in a pair of Grey sweats with a white T-shirt on. I was used to her wearing blue jeans with some kind of sweater, which I liked, so this look didnât suit her well.
